A driveway that has dropped, holed out or lifted in Pakenham: what to do in the first hour
Get the cars off it, fence the hole, and read the triage table before you pay anyone an after-hours rate. Do these six things now
- Move every vehicle off the slab and park on the street. A 100 mm domestic slab bridging a washout will drop the moment a loaded car sits on it. Do not drive across a soft spot to reach the garage.
- Fence the hole or the lip. A wheelie bin, two chairs and a length of hi-vis tape is enough. Cardinia streets are dark and the real risk is somebody walking into it at 10pm, not the concrete itself.
- If water is running or bubbling up, shut the property mains off at the meter tap near the front boundary, then call South East Water faults on 13 28 12. A leak on their side of the meter is their repair, not yours.
- If the damage is between your fence line and the kerb, stop. That strip is the vehicle crossing and it is a Cardinia Shire asset. Report it on 1300 787 624 before you engage anyone to work on it.
- Photograph it now, with a tape measure in the shot. Width of the crack, height of the lip, how far the panel has dropped, and the date on your phone. It costs nothing and it settles insurance, warranty and council arguments later.
- Do not put your hand, a shovel or your weight into a void. A washout under a slab can be a metre deep, and the edge you are kneeling on is the unsupported part.

What makes the damage worse in the next 24 hours
Four things turn a $900 panel replacement into a $6,000 job, and all four happen in the first day while people are trying to be helpful.
Driving over it. An unsupported slab is doing bending work it was never designed for. One trip to get the car out of the garage can crack the panel into three pieces and take out the two panels either side. If the car is trapped, leave it there and call us before you move it.
Tipping fill into the void. Soil, sand or broken bricks in a washout feel like progress and are not. Loose fill holds water against the underside of the slab, keeps the leak hidden and all of it has to come back out before anyone can compact a proper base. It also makes the eventual excavation dearer, because that material now has to be carted away and tipped.
Leaving the water running. If a leak caused the void, every hour it runs enlarges the cavity. In Cardinia clay the water tracks along the underside of the slab and can undermine the garage apron or the house edge beam several metres from where it surfaced.
Hosing or pressure washing the area. People want to clean the mud back so they can see the damage. On a live washout you are simply pumping more water into the cavity. Sweep it dry instead and take the photos in daylight.
What is safe to do yourself and what is genuinely dangerous
Safe: coning off, taping off, sweeping, covering a hole with a properly supported plywood sheet or steel plate, turning the property mains off, taking photographs, and laying a timber ramp over a small lip so it is visible and less likely to catch a toe.
Genuinely dangerous, and we mean it. Climbing into or reaching into a void, because the edge you are standing on is the unsupported part and slabs fall inwards. Digging anywhere near the crossover or the water meter without services located: water, gas, power and communications all run through that strip, so call Before You Dig Australia on 1100 first, allow two business days, and it is free. Cutting or breaking concrete with a hired saw or breaker when you do not know where the conduits run, which matters most on newer estate blocks where the supply to the house can be shallow. Jacking or levelling a slab yourself with car jacks or timber wedges. And working over an open sewer or stormwater connection, where gas can collect in a confined space.
If a hole has opened up wider than about 300 mm and you cannot see the bottom of it, treat it as a services failure and get the relevant authority out before you get a concreter. Fixing the concrete first just buries the real problem under a brand new slab.

After-hours call-out versus waiting until Monday: the honest numbers
Here is what the choice actually costs in the Cardinia Shire in 2026. A concreter attending after 6pm on a weekday, or any time on a Sunday or public holiday, charges $180 to $280 for the first hour plus travel from the depot. A make safe on top of that, meaning barricading, a cold mix asphalt ramp over a lip, or a steel plate bridging a void, runs $350 to $900 depending on what materials get left behind. None of that is a repair. It buys you a safe site until the real work is scheduled.
The same visit booked as a normal quote inspection in business hours is free, and the repair itself is no cheaper or dearer for having waited three days. So the after-hours premium is $500 to $1,200 for the privilege of having somebody standing on your driveway on a Saturday night.
Pay it when: a person could fall into or trip over the damage before morning and you cannot barricade it safely; water is escaping and you cannot isolate it; the driveway is the only access for a wheelchair or mobility scooter; or a work vehicle is trapped and losing a day of trade costs more than the premium.
Do not pay it when: the damage is cosmetic, the crack has stopped moving, the site is fenced, the car can park on the street, or it is simply annoying. Cracking, scaling, joint failure and slow settlement are all slow-motion problems. Nothing changes between Saturday night and Monday morning that a bin and a roll of tape cannot hold.
One more honest line. Plenty of the calls that come in with the word emergency turn out to be a driveway that has been moving quietly for two or three years and has finally been noticed. That is not an emergency. That is a job to quote properly, with the drainage checked first, because a new slab poured over the same failed drainage will do exactly the same thing again. What we actually do on an emergency visit, in order
- Make safe first. Barricade, plate or ramp, and confirm that pedestrian access to the front door does not run through the damage.
- Find the cause before quoting the cost. A camera down the stormwater if a washout is suspected, a moisture check at the garage edge, and a look at where the downpipes discharge. On a lot of Cardinia estate blocks the answer is a downpipe or an ag line quietly dumping under the slab edge.
- Measure and photograph for you. You get the images and the readings whether you use us for the repair or not. If an insurer or the Shire ends up involved, you will need them.

- Book the real work. A single panel is usually 2 to 5 working days from go-ahead, because the base has to be excavated, re-sheeted with Class 3 crushed rock and compacted in 50 mm lifts before any concrete arrives.
When it is not an emergency at all
We say this on the phone even though it costs us the call-out. Hairline cracking, weeds in a joint, a discoloured slab, tyre marks, a sealer that has gone patchy, and a control joint that has widened by a millimetre or two are all normal. Concrete on reactive Cardinia clay moves with the seasons. It shrinks through a dry February and closes back up after the winter rain. If both sides of the crack are level and water is not entering the garage, you can wait, and in plenty of cases you can leave it alone permanently.
The other honest one: if your driveway is more than 25 to 30 per cent cracked, patched or sunken, an emergency repair is money thrown at a slab that has already failed.
